The Staple Matters More Than You Think

For some reason, oboe staples have traditionally been treated as something secondary—almost disposable. We believe they deserve much more attention.

A staple is not simply something that holds the reed blades together. It is the first continuation of the oboe’s bore. Its length, wall thickness, metal, internal shape, and especially the shape of its tip can influence response, pitch, projection, and overall reed performance.

Just like instruments, staples come in different shapes, dimensions, and materials—and the right staple can make a surprisingly significant difference.

Sometimes It’s Not the Reed—or the Oboe

Even excellent reed makers sometimes struggle with persistently flat middle C’s and G’s and assume the problem is the reed or instrument.

Sometimes, the staple is the culprit.

The geometry of the staple tip is particularly important. Staples with a more circular opening can influence these notes differently than staples with a more oval opening.

ArgenPlus staples are based on the classic Glotin-style geometry, featuring a distinctly oval tip that can help support pitch and stability in these traditionally troublesome areas.
